1974 AD is a Nepali rock band that was formed in Kathmandu, Nepal in the early 1990s. They are known for experimenting with various genres of music, including Nepali folk, ragas, rock, funk, blues, and jazz. The band has achieved significant success and is considered one of the most successful recording artists in Nepal. Their albums consistently rank among the top ten best-selling albums according to Hits FM of Nepal
- Formation (1994): The group was initially formed by a group of teachers from Gyanodaya School in Lalitpur, Nepal. The founding members included guitarist Phiroj Shyangden, bassist Nirakar Yakthumba Limbu, and drummer Bhanu A. During their early days, they played various genres of music, including hard rock, heavy metal, rock, and blues. Their hit tune “Mayaluleh” from their debut album “Time Out” established 1974 AD as a household name.
- Variety in Music: 1974 AD’s songs cover a wide range of themes, including patriotism, Nepali virtues, unity, love, and nationalism. Their music reflects diverse influences, and they have successfully experimented with various genres. Hits like “Nepali,” “Sambodhan,” “Pahilo Junima,” “Parelima,” “Samjhi Baschu,” and “Chudaina Timro Mayale” have been some of the biggest hits in Nepalese music.
- Concert Success: In 2000, their concert called ‘Rock Yatra’ was attended by more than 60,000 people, making it the largest concert attendance in Nepal’s history.
